How we verify locals

Last updated October 30, 2026

TripVibz is only useful if the people called locals actually are. A badge you can get by ticking a box isn't worth showing, so here is exactly what each badge means and how the ✓ is earned. We describe the method in full and keep the exact numbers private, because publishing them would mainly help the people trying to fake it.

What the badges mean

How the ✓ is earned

What it doesn't prove

Repeated presence near a city over weeks is strong evidence of living there, but it is evidence, not proof. Someone who commutes in daily, or a student in town for a semester, can earn it honestly and does know the place. A resident whose phone network routes through another metro may take longer to earn it, or earn it in the wrong neighboring city. That's why the badge reads "Local" and not "Resident", why votes from everyone decide which takes rise, and why you can always tell us when something looks off.

What we store

For each signed-in person and each city: whether they were near it at the last check, how many separate days they've been seen near it, the first and last of those dates, and whether an editor removed the badge. We do not store your IP address, your coordinates, or a history of where you've been. The full detail is in the privacy page, including how to have it deleted.

Why we built it this way

Most ways of "verifying" locals either ask people to prove where they live (which almost nobody will do for a one-sentence tip) or trust whatever they type. We wanted something that costs an honest local nothing and costs a faker real effort: you earn it by being here, repeatedly, over time. It isn't perfect, and we'll keep adjusting it as the site grows. If you think it's wrong about someone, hello@tripvibz.com.
